Every Saturday night during the fall and spring semesters, a crowd gathers to hear a lecture in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre at UBC. The lectures are open to the public and are free of admission charges. This has been going on since 1916, yet most Vancouverites seem quite unaware of it, unless connected with UBC in some way.

Social Media for the Creative Print E-mail

This, it seems, is the age of social media. MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, they're all there, helping us to be social. But are they succeeding?

Well, they're certainly succeeding at something, but many of us are uncertain of what that is, except for the certainties that they're gathering lots of cultural intelligence, of a sort, and making a pile of dough doing it. Participating in this sort of social media sometimes seems like being a volunteer labourer for capitalism. We spend no small amounts of time providing Facebook with remarkable details about our private lives (of the type that, a decade ago, we'd have been screaming murder if a corporate entity tried to collect) so that they can use it to make money. In return they give us... what? Farmville? An accumulation of status updates as a substitute for real communication? Gee, thanks.

Rhizome Café to mark third anniversary Print E-mail

If you haven't yet checked out the Rhizome Café, you're missing out on an important community experience in Mount Pleasant.

In some ways, a visit to Rhizome is like taking a trip back to Commercial Drive in the 1980s. It's truly a unique experience in modern Vancouver. A coffee shop, restaurant, and community centre, all in one. Think La Quena, but a little more structured and you'd be close, but Rhizome is much more than that.

Rhizome

Rhizome is a space and a venue that welcomes the marginalised, but it's no ghetto. People from all walks of life gather at the Rhizome for readings, music, queer events, fundraisers, social justice work, and much more. Everyone is welcome.

No Fun City: The Documentary Print E-mail

One of the primary motivations that inspire the creators of nofuncity.com is that there is a lot of really good, non-corporate culture happening in this city, but it gets so little media attention that those who might be interested in it seldom hear about cool events until after they're over, unless they're well-connected with the underground scene, and in a city as expensive as this, it's not easy keeping up with the scene and paying the bills.
