If you haven't yet checked out the Rhizome Café, you're missing out on an important community experience in Mount Pleasant. In some ways, a visit to Rhizome is like taking a trip back to Commercial Drive in the 1980s. It's truly a unique experience in modern Vancouver. A coffee shop, restaurant, and community centre, all in one. Think La Quena, but a little more structured and you'd be close, but Rhizome is much more than that.
Rhizome is a space and a venue that welcomes the marginalised, but it's no ghetto. People from all walks of life gather at the Rhizome for readings, music, queer events, fundraisers, social justice work, and much more. Everyone is welcome. The meals at Rhizome are not necessarily the cheapest in town, but the quality is exceptional and, in a city where the dollar increasingly rules, it's a great bargain for great food. If you're struggling a bit, they even offer a 'pay-what-you-can' lentil dish that is quite tasty. And you needn't feel ashamed about paying a small price if that's all you can manage - you put the money in a box completely anonymously. This fall, Rhizome will be celebrating their third anniversary. In conjunction with this, a silent auction is being held to raise funds to keep Rhizome going. If you have something to donate, or if you'd like to see what's available for bidding on, check out the nofuncity.com calendar listing for details. The auction starts September 17, and concludes 10:00 pm October 3rd at the anniversary party. They are also welcoming anyone who would like to do a 60 second performance in any genre, as long as it is about Rhizome and is a minute or less.
