Location: VPL - Central Library, 350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC

Details:

It’s simple! Five presenters get fifteen minutes each to introduce one of their favourite dead poets and read a selection of that poet’s work. To clarify here, by “dead poet” we mean “non-living poet”, not “character from that Robin Williams movie”.
The reading will be held in a new room at the library! As you may have heard, the VPL has opened up new event spaces on its 8th and 9th floors, including a theatre (and our new home), the Montalbano Family Theatre. We’re thrilled to be one of the first organizations to move their events into this space.

Our first reading in the new venue will feature:

June Jordan (1936 – 2002), read by Phanuel Antwi
Audre Lorde (1934 – 1992), read by Bibiana Tomasic
Gwendolyn MacEwen (1941 – 1987), read by Carleigh Baker
Richard Outram (1930 – 2005), read by Amanda Jernigan

Attendance is free. We start more-or-less on time, so come early to make sure you don’t miss out.

In a poetry double-bill at the library, our event will be preceded (at 1 PM) by the launch of What the Poets Are Doing: Canadian Poets in Conversation. The launch will feature readings by past (and future) DPRS presenters Elizabeth Bachinsky, Raoul Fernandes, Amanda Jernigan and Russell Thornton, and will be hosted by DPRS coordinator Rob Taylor. You can learn more about that event via the attached poster, or the event’s Facebook page.
